This week in ISM we mainly listened to speeches that other students gave over their topic of study. It is always interesting to hear what other students have been studying and learning because it is such an independent class, and oftentimes I am completely unaware of what the person next to me is working on. It is interesting, as well, to see some of the juniors and ISM 1 students become more confident in their speeches. It is such an encouraging transition to watch, as they become more confident, poised, and comfortable speaking to the classroom and in front of people. I remember making that transition myself, and it is really rewarding to watch your friends and classmates make it too, especially because we try to help each other out as a class and make each other the best we can be. Speeches are something that is quite nerve-wracking for a lot of people, including myself. I used to hate public speaking, but ISM has really helped me through that with all of the speeches we have to give. It is integral to my future as a medical professional, because I will likely be speaking at seminars and conferences across the country, especially if I am employed at a teaching hospital.
