I am excited to say that I have begun the process of getting certified as an unpaid intern at U.T. Southwestern Medical Center for the Department of Surgical Oncology. This is something that Dr. Mansour, myself, and Coach Goff think will be incredibly beneficial to my future career in medicine, hopefully in surgical oncology, and my current mentorship under Dr. Mansour. Visiting the operating rooms was the highlight of my year in Independent Study and Mentorship last year, and it is something that I want to see more of this year. I feel that this process of getting certified as an unpaid student intern for the department of surgical oncology will allow me to spend much more time in the operating rooms this year as Dr. Mansour wouldn't have to take a day off of work to visit Parkland with me. It also means that I would get quite a few more opportunities in the actual operating theater. Dr. Mansour has explicitly stated that he wants me to be more involved in the operating rooms, be it a better view of the actual procedure or scrubbing in and helping. All I know is that I am incredibly excited for this opportunity and feel very grateful that Dr. Mansour has placed enough trust in me to allow me to do this.
