This week I have narrowed down both my mentor search and and my interview process even further. I am waiting for a few final confirmations, and then I will hopefully have my last two interviews over before the 15th of November. On October 25th, I interviewed Dr. Joseph Murphy, a pediatric surgeon at Children's Hospital in Dallas. I was very much interested by the speciality of pediatric surgery, because they get to do a little bit of everything. As I was discussing the various surgeries with Dr. Murphy, he told me that he does trauma cases, tumor removals, and fixes congenital anomalies in newborn. Even though I don't necessarily want to study general pediatric surgery, it might be interesting to study simply because of the vast array of surgeries and experiences one is exposed to. It would definitely be incredibly educational and informative, and it may help to solidify my desire to go into surgery, especially pediatrics. Since I decided I wanted to study surgery more, I have been hesitant to confirm pediatrics or not. After a few interviews with surgeons, however, I think I definitely want to pursue pediatrics more, be it this year or later on in the future. I am incredibly excited to see who I finally decided to shadow this year, because there are so many different directions I could take.
